I recently attended a plein aire workshop in Hot Springs village with Richard McKinley from May 7-11. There were 18 artists in attendance, and although the heat and humidity were exceptionally high we had a wonderful time.
If you ever get the chance to attend one of his workshops it is amazing! We compared plein aire set ups, made new friends and learned a great deal about the different underpainting and painting techniques that Richard McKinley uses in his work.
Here’s one of my paintings from the workshop of a cool rock at the edge of a spring I found during the workshop. It is done with pastels, and I finished it after the workshop.
I returned home with plans for streamlining my plein aire set up, new techniques which I’m thoroughly enjoying, and an appreciation for plein aire artists as a whole.
As the Arkansas Pastel Society’s next meeting is a paint out in Two Rivers Park I’m looking forward to painting and evaluating my streamlined set up.
